Welcome to “Revenge of the JPEG”.

My 3-year project to shoot SOC (straight out of camera) JPEG images.

Why am I doing this? What do I expect to get out of this?

Well, the idea, or phrase “Revenge of the Jpeg” is not new to me.

In 2012-2013 ( I had to use the Internet Archive Wayback Machine), I had the same idea, for different reasons.

The reason back then was that I was pushing back against the fact that so much post-processing was being done on images; I no longer believed the images presented as photography were actually still photographs!

Now things have gotten worse; AI-generated or altered images are being presented everywhere. The line between a real image and an artificially generated one is so blurred that most people don’t even notice anymore.

I felt it was time to resurrect the idea of shooting straight out of camera JPEG’s.

It’s time for revenge against the AI chatbots!

Now a disclaimer: I have used AI chatbots at work, at home, etc. I have written books on using AI for coding. I am not advocating that the villagers storm the AI data centers; I just want people who create, specifically on this blog, photographers, to understand the implications of AI-generated images and try to help along a movement of producing images that capture reality using only the tools built into the camera.

My pledge to you is that no image presented here or on this website’s social media feeds will be anything other than an image produced straight out of the camera. The only editing I consider permissible in post is cropping the image, period.

No AI-produced writing, nothing but my mostly grammatically correct prose here, just spell-checked.
